Being a student (even a non-traditional student) has many useful benefits out in the real world.
One great perk of being a student are student discounts offered by many local businesses. Many stores, restaurants, ski resorts, museums, and sporting events offer student discounts on purchases and admission/ticket fees. Clubs and organizations also often have reduced membership fees for students.
For example, Heidi’s Deli here in town offers college students a free fountain drink with the purchase of any sandwich. I am also getting ready to join the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance by paying the discounted “Student/Starving artist” membership fee.
If you live in a college town, discount opportunities abound. Look around and see what discounts are available in your area. Look for signs posted in businesses, or discount policies listed on brochures and price sheets. Check local businesses’ websites for discount policies. And obviously, it never hurts to ask, “Hey, do you offer a discount for college students?”
Policies will vary from place to place, but generally, you will need to be a registered student with a current college ID card to get a discount. Never, ever feel foolish asking for a student discount, even though you’re somewhat older than traditional students! Technically, they can’t refuse, because you are a college student. Some places may define a “student” as up through age 18, in which case you’re out of luck. But if they don’t state a specific age limit, feel free to ask… and take advantage of this great perk.
Even for non-traditional students, every little bit of money saved will help you move towards your goals!

Just found your site thanks to google. Thanks for the tip. I am very non traditional. Starting back next month at the age of 39. I am also a first time college student. Should be interesting. I am now going to read some other posts of yours. Thanks again, I hadn’t thought of the discounts.
