For so many months, I’ve been thinking– and telling people– “I’m going back to school in September”.
Like Christmas to a child in summer, it seemed like some vague fuzzy future wonder that would never get here, so there was no reason to even think about it.
But now I’m realizing that September is NEXT MONTH.
In fact, orientation is tomorrow!
Classes start on September 4th.
It’s almost here. I’m nervous and excited and can’t wait to get going.
I shall be The Oldest Living Freshman In Captivity.
My first attempt at college, by the way, was back in the 1986-87 academic year, at Southern Connecticut State University. Just imagine a young CC arriving on campus, a few months shy of her 18th birthday, talented and promising and apathetic as hell.
What a time-and-money-wasting travesty that year was.
With no clear goals in mind, and my dad slowly dying at home, concentrating on school work was next to impossible.
According to my official transcript from Southern, my GPA starts with a decimal point. It might have helped if I’d ever gone to classes, but we mustn’t dwell on our mistakes.
Onward and upward!

I’m so glad that I stumbled across your blog so that I can tell you that you’re not the oldest freshman in captivity and that I hope you have a terrific four years…and then perhaps a couple more in graduate school.
About my first comment, I read about a senior citizen (80 maybe) who graduated from college in May and who has the distinction of being the oldest graduate in the United States. In fact, she graduated with her granddaughter. The college was either in Kentucky or Kansas (a K state), so you might want to google it for more facts. I found it inspirational.
The main reason your blog pulled me in is because I teach psychology at a community college, and I know from years and years of teaching young adults (and lots of older ones too!) that education is the ticket to a better life. No matter how talented, hard working, or smart someone is, our society still values credentials, and that little piece of paper will open lots of doors for you.
Have fun…and study hard!
I was exaggerating when I said “oldest”, but I will still feel out of place among all the younger students. I could be their mom! Horrors!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
